BWB Consulting has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Ground Solutions Team to be located in our Nottingham, Birmingham or Manchester office.

The role will be predominantly office-based and will involve working as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer within the Service undertaking geotechnical data compilation and assessment, reporting and a broad range of geotechnical design in relation to; foundations, floor slabs, roads and pavement, retaining structures, engineered (cut and embankment)  slopes, earthworks, investigation and treatment of mine-workings . It may also involve some site-based work (relating to ground investigations, ground improvement, construction supervision, earthworks inspection and validation). 

You will be given the responsibility for managing aspects of large complex projects as well as small/medium sized specialist ones.  You will coordinate site work and construction ground-work operations (earthworks, ground improvement and/or geotechnical construction). You will be highly organised and technically independent, providing clear and regular communications with colleagues, Clients, and sub-contractors.  The role will be focused on servicing both internal and external clients.

The Ground Solutions team works either as part of multi-disciplinary BWB project teams or independently for a range of key clients.  We provide timely and cost-effective ground consultancy services to the transportation, development and property sectors on projects of any type or size. 

About you

The ideal candidate will have a degree in a geotechnical related discipline such as civil/geotechnical engineering or engineering geology and will probably have between 5- and 10-years’ experience with a geotechnical consultancy and/or contractor’s design office. Ideally, they will be chartered, or able to demonstrate substantial progress  towards chartership with a relevant professional institution.

The successful candidates will have initiative and drive, and be able to determine what needs doing and then do it with relatively low levels of supervision. They are expected to be able to demonstrate good experience and working knowledge of the following skills/abilities/areas of work:

  • Technical knowledge, experience and demonstrable capability as required for geotechnical assessment and detailed design, report writing and specification writing.
  • Specific experience of work for linear infrastructure projects and/or highways schemes in accordance with CD622, would be useful but not essential.
  • Experience of supervising and validating earthworks, ground improvement and/or geotechnical construction projects.
  • Some level of experience of pricing the geotechnical aspects of projects.
  • Experience of undertaking geotechnical investigation,  soil and rock logging, soil and groundwater sampling and in-situ testing would be useful but not essential.
  • Competency with the MS Office suite of programs
  • Experience in compiling exploratory hole records and data manipulation with Holebase would be useful but is not essential.
  • Competence with AutoCAD would be useful but not essential.
  • Excellent communicator, both written and oral, with the ability to adapt communication style to suit different circumstances.
  • Proactive approach with drive, positivity and enthusiasm and a strong desire to succeed.
  • Ability to deliver work and tasks on time and within budget with a strong focus on client care is essential, as is a willingness to travel. A full driving license is essential.
  • An understanding of geotechnical aspects of new developments/transport infrastructure projects and an commensurate  awareness of how risks and liabilities can impact upon land ownership and development would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work within a team on multi-disciplinary schemes.
