About the role

BWB Consulting has an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Engineer/ to be based in the Water team at either our Birmingham or Nottingham office, with the opportunity to become involved in a wide range of projects including;

  • Flood Risk Assessments
  • Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) Design
  • Large scale civil engineering projects
  • Watercourse Hydraulic Modelling
  • Environmental Impact Assessments

The team you will join is part of BWB’s Environment Group and is a diverse mix of engineers and geographers combining their skills together to provide a holistic approach in our work related to the water environment.

BWB adopt a truly open, collaborative atmosphere where you will be encouraged to find solutions to issues arising on your own projects taking on board the advice, skills and expertise of others across our many disciplines and supported through our graduate training scheme.

The role would be suitable for someone with a practical and logical approach to problem solving who would like the opportunity to experience the breadth of work a consultant at BWB can become involved in. The role predominantly entails the research and delivery of Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) schemes, Flood Risk Assessments and hydraulic flood modelling.

The diversity of our service offering means you will be able to experience a range of project types and sizes in your role and be encouraged to contribute to and influence projects immediately, with support from senior team members. The role will also require liaison and collaboration with clients and relevant approval authorities.

As an integral member of the team, you will be responsible for delivering schemes of varying size, with support from a dedicated project manager, and the team around you. This includes devising appropriate solutions, producing drawings, authoring reports and interpreting calculations/software outputs.

About the team

The BWB Environment Group has the capability to provide the integrated ‘one stop shop’ service needed for major projects, as well as tailored or bespoke specialist services as appropriate. Our Environment Group provides advisory, investigative, design and validation services relating to all aspects of the environment.

The Water Service sits within the Environment Group which is made up of a range of qualified engineers and environmental consultants with specific experience in flood risk, drainage, and environmental planning/engineering disciplines. We have a presence across the country and are keen to encourage opportunities for training and career development tailored to individual personalities.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary BWB project team or independently, we provide consultancy services to the development and property sector on projects of any type or size, from pre-planning application through to construction. The breadth and scale of work is incredibly varied.

About you

We are seeking a motivated individual with a logical approach to problem solving. The ability to work independently - with appropriate support - and knowing when to seek advice will be key to excelling within this role. Water’s role is predominantly as a pre-planning advisor, so solutions you put forward will shape and influence developments moving forward, therefore a desire to work on schemes at a strategic level would be beneficial.

The ideal candidate will be able to draw on experience from industry work placements or previous experience, however recently graduated applicants with a degree in engineering, geography, or similar would be welcomed.

From a technical perspective, you will have a sound grasp of key engineering principles, and ideally have some knowledge of relevant software packages including AutoCAD and ideally Micro Drainage, although training is provided.

  • You will be able to show that you have strong communication and personal effectiveness skills, with the ability build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.
  • An aptitude to effectively work in a team taking individual and collective responsibility for delivering projects.
  • Confidence to act in an outward facing capacity as BWB’s representative in dealings with regulators and our clients.
